One of Vice President Mike Pence's final days in office will be spent in New York's North Country region with a planned visit to Fort Drum on Sunday.

The visit was announced on Wednesday evening by Rep. Elise Stefanik, the Republican who represents the vast region who has been a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump.

“It is an honor to welcome Vice President Pence to our district to express the Trump Administration’s appreciation for our selfless military community," Stefanik said.

"As the chief advocate for Fort Drum and the 10th Mountain Division, I express my sincere gratitude to Vice President Pence and the entire Trump Administration for their unwavering commitment over the past four years to rebuild America’s military readiness and support the brave men and women who proudly serve."

The visit comes after Stefanik backed a challenge to some electors in the presidential election last week, the same day a mob of Trump supporters rioted at the U.S. Capitol, interrupting the pro forma proceedings.

Pence, presiding over the vote in the U.S. Senate, was taken to a secure location alongside members of Congress.

The Pence visit closes out the Trump era for Stefanik, who has been a prominent congressional ally of the president. She gained national prominence in the last year with a forceful defense of Trump during the first impeachment vote, when Trump faced charges stemming from efforts to pressure Ukraine officials to dig up dirt on Joe Biden.

Trump was impeached for a second time on Wednesday, with lawmakers blaming Trump for inciting the riot with his rhetoric at a rally. Stefanik has condemend the violence, but does not think fault lies with Trump for what happened.
