Gov. Andrew Cuomo called on Friday for President Donald Trump to resign from office or be removed through impeachment in the wake of a riot at the U.S. Capitol that killed five people, including a police officer.

"I call on every New York federal official to call for him to resign," Cuomo said. "Call for him to resign. I don't care if you're a Democrat, I don't care if you're a Republican. You're a government official."

Trump is due to end his term on Jan. 20 when President-elect Joe Biden is sworn into office.

But there is a growing push from Democratic and Republican lawmakers in Congress for Trump to leave office earlier after the unrest at the Capitol, with many blaming the president's rhetoric for spurring a mob of his supporters to storm the building on Wednesday.

House Democrats, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have already indicated they will draw up articles of impeachment against Trump. The timing to do so before Jan. 20 would extraordinarily tight. But Cuomo said the move would cut off Trump's access to presidential powers.

"Impeachment also means the president doesn't have the power to pardon, and some of the pardons this president has done are really reprehensible," Cuomo said. "Put your politics aside and do what any reasonable American believes."
