New York will deploy 1,000 members of the National Guard to aid with security in Washington, D.C. after a riot by supporters of President Donald Trump, Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday said.

The deployment, requested by U.S. National Guard officials, will not affect the effort to manage the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Cuomo said. It is expected to last up to two weeks, covering the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden.

"For 244 years, the cornerstone of our democracy has been the peaceful transfer of power, and New York stands ready to help ensure the will of the American people is carried out, safely and decisively," Cuomo said in the statement. "God bless our brave men and women in uniform and God bless the United States of America."

A mob of Trump supporters breached the U.S. Capitol as lawmakers were preparing to certify the presidential election.
