All 213 Legislative seats were up for re-election this year and while it is too close to call still for a few of the major races, it is looking to be a disappointing election for Senate Democrats.
Democrats needed two more seats to gain a supermajority but they could end up losing between 4-5 Senate seats, possibly more, according to the State Board of elections website.
These are preliminary results and the Associated Press has not officially called many of these races, but here is a brief breakdown of the votes so far.
District #1: Republican Assemblyman Anthony Palumbo is slightly ahead with 57% of the vote so far compared to his Democratic opponent Laura Ahearn with 43%. This open Suffolk County seat, which will be left vacant by GOP Senator Kenneth LaValle, has not been yet been officially called by the AP.
District #2: Republican Mario Mattera is leading slightly against Democrat Michael Michael Siderakis with 64% of the vote. This seat belonged to former Senate Minority Leader John Flanagan. This race has not been called by the Associated Press.
District #3: Republican Alexis Weik has pulled ahead in a hotly contested race against Democratic incumbent Senator Monica Martinez. This Long Island seat has been held by Republicans for decades until Martinez won in 2018. This race has not been called by the Associated Press.
District #5: Incumbent Democratic Senator Jim Gaughran is losing right now to Republican Edmund Smyth who has 55% of the votes. The Associated Press has not called this race.
District #6: Republican Dennis Dunne in Nassau County.
is also pulling ahead of incumbent Democratic candidate Senator Kevin Thomas. Unofficial results have Dunne in the lead with 53% of the vote.
District #40: Early and Election Day votes have Republican candidate Rob Astorino ahead of incumbent Senator Peter Harckham with 53% of the vote.
District #41: Republican Senator Sue Serino faced off again against Democratic candidate Karen Smythe. The race was tight in 2018 and this year is no different. Serino is unofficially ahead with 58% of the votes.
District #42: Republican Mike Martucci took the lead in the race against Democratic incumbent Senator Jen Metzer in a district that encompasses parts of the Catskills and the Hudson Valley. Martucci has 55% of the votes right now.
District #46: A tight race for a seat that will be left open by Republican Senator George Amedore is so far favoring Republican candidate Richard Amedure. Amedure leads with 51% of the vote against Democratic candidate Michelle Hinchey.
District #50: Republican Angi Renna has taken an early lead against Democrat John Mannion with 53% of the vote. This seat was left open when Senator Bob Antoncci retired to become a judge.
District #55: Democratic candidate Samra Brouk is leading against Republican candidate Christopher Missick with 52% of the early and Election Day votes. This race has not been called officially.
District #56: Democrat Jeremy Cooney has right now a very small lead against Republican Mike Barry with only 51% of the vote. This Monroe County seat was left open by Senator Joseph Robach who is retiring.
District #58: Republican Senator Thomas O'Mara is leading against Democratic challenger Danks Burke with 62% of the vote so far. This race is a rematch of the one in 2016.
District #60: Democratic Assemblyman Sean Ryan is ahead in the race for this Buffalo area seat. Ryan has so far 57% of the votes compared to Republican Joshua Mertzlufft with 43%.
