A political action committee funded by an education reform group is spending millions of dollars aiding two Democrats in Long Island state Senate races.

The group New Yorkers for a Balanced Albany so far has spent $1.6 million in support of incumbent Democrat Kevin Thomas, a freshman facing a competitive re-election bid this year.

The group also has also committed $1.65 million for Democratic candidate Laura Ahearn. She is running for an eastern Long Island seat that was vacated by Republican Ken LaValle. Republican Anthony Palumbo is also vying for the open seat.

The money, elections records show, is going toward mail and TV and digital ads in the districts.

The PAC is backed by Students First NY, an education reform group that in prior years has opposed the election of Democrats, including Senate Education Committee Chairwoman Shelley Mayer in 2018.

But Democrats -- winning seats on Long Island and the Hudson Valley -- gained control of the chamber for the first time in a decade two years ago.
