New York’s 49th State Senate District encompasses Fulton and Hamilton counties, as well as parts of Herkimer, Schenectady and Saratoga counties. It’s a vast expanse that includes both urban centers and rural farmland.

The district has a Republican enrollment advantage, and it’s been represented by a Republican for decades. Hugh Farley represented the district until 2016 when he opted not to run for re-election. He was succeeded by former Assemblyman and former Assembly Minority Leader, Jim Tedisco who has served since then.

Democratic challenger Thearse McCalmon discussed her candidacy, and criminal justice reform with Capital Tonight host Susan Arbetter.
