New York's ban on single-use plastic bags is being enforced today after months of delays and a court challenge to the cheers of environmental organizations.

“New York’s bag ban has already improved New York’s health by cutting down on plastic pollution," said Kate Kurera, the deputy director of Environmental Advocates of NY. "We look forward to the State beginning enforcement and stores complying with this important law."

The ban on plastic bags was initially set to take effect on March 1. The law's enforcement, however, was delayed by a lawsuit backed by a plastic bag industry group. The suit was later dismissed by a state Supreme Court.

The ban is meant to target single-use bags that environmental groups have led to polluted waterways and are manufactrued used petrochemicals. There are some exceptions to the ban, such as pharmacy bags and takeout food.
