The Assembly Judiciary Chair Jeffrey Dinowitz is deeply concerned about Chief Judge Janet DiFiore’s decision to let 46 Supreme Court Justices go at the end of the year.
All are around the age of 70, which is the mandatory age of retirement for New York justices. DiFiore could recertify each justice for two years, up to three times, but she is opting not to in order to reduce the courts’ budget by $300 million.
Dinowitz tells Capital Tonight host Susan Arbetter that because COVID-19 shut down many courts for months, there’s already a backlog in cases, and this decision will compound the waiting period for many people seeking justice.
"Justice delayed is justice denied," he told Capital Tonight.
