Governor Andrew Cuomo on Saturday will be the keynote speaker for the Palm Beach County Democrats' gala fundraiser.

The event is being held virtually this year amid the pandemic, and will also feature Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez and Rep. Val Demings, a runner-up in Vice President Joe Biden's running mate search.

Cuomo is speaking to Democrats in a pivotal swing state for a fundraiser benefitting the party in President Donald Trump's own backyard. Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club is in Palm Beach.

The New York governor, now in his third term, has seen his national profile rise this year during the coronavirus pandemic and the state's response. His daily briefings earlier in the year were heavily watched and for critics of the president provided an alternative viewing from Trump's news conferences.

Cuomo also rarely dips his toe into national politics, rarely leaving the state in pre-pandemic times and when doing so often will make it a one-day trip.

Cuomo had been asked to keynote the fundraiser by Democrats in Florida.

"I can’t tell you how much your participation as Keynote Speaker would motivate our PBC volunteers, donors, and voters, and would be an ideal platform for you to speak in one of Florida’s largest media markets to highlight all that is at stake in this election," wrote Palm Beach County Democratic Chair Terrie Rizzo, who is also the state chair for the party.

"We expect 400-500 participants, including our members of Congress, most of our many state and county elected officials, plus hundreds of party leaders, donors, and activists. Funds raised will be used directly for GOTV, including mailing slate cards to all Democrats and no party voters with vote by mail ballots."
