Not wearing a mask when unable to socially distance yourself is "just dumb," Governor Andrew Cuomo on Thursday said as the state's coronavirus infection rate over the last day peaked above 1 percent.

"It's just dumb not to wear a mask," Cuomo said. "It's dumb."

Two people were confirmed to have died of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. Hospitalizations are now at 500 patients, an increase from the previous day. Tens of thousands of tests results in the last day found a positive rate of just over 1 percent, Cuomo said.

Cuomo and state officials have urged New Yorkers to wear masks in public and when social distancing of at least six feet is not possible.

Cuomo last month acknowledged he made a mistake in not urging people to wear masks in public sooner to limit the spread of the virus.
