A federal appeals court in Manhattan on Friday kept New York's ban on gatherings of more than 50 people in a case stemming from whether a 175-person wedding should be allowed in western New York.

U.S. District Court Judge Denny Chin placed a stay on a previous ruling that could have lifted the ban and allowed a 175-person wedding to go forward. The wedding is planned for Saturday.

New York has placed a 50-person cap on social gatherings earlier this year in order to limit the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. The stay ordered by Chin came after a request from Governor Andrew Cuomo's administration, which is trying to stop the wedding from moving forward until an appeal is heard.

An August 7 ruling from a federal judge allowed weddings of more than 50 people to go forward.
