The interim state education commmissioner is stepping down from her post on Aug. 13, top officials said Thursday evening at the state Board of Regents.

Shannon Tahoe had taken the post last year following the departure of Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia.

Tahoe had led the State Education Department amid the coronavirus pandemic that closed New York schools in March. Schools are now developing reopening plans due at the end of this month and a final decision on how and whether schools hold in-person classes this September is expected in less than two weeks.

The State Education Department released its own guidance for reopening -- ranging from rules for social distancing, mask wearing and transportation requirements -- last week.

“The Board and I thank Interim Commissioner Tahoe for her leadership during this unprecedented time," Board of Regents Chancellor Betty Rosa and Vice Chancellor T. Andrew Brown.

"When Ms. Tahoe took over the position, no one could have imagined that a global pandemic was on the horizon.  Ms. Tahoe capably led the Department through one of its most challenging times and proved herself as a dedicated and personable leader. Throughout her 14 years at the Department, Ms. Tahoe served the Board of Regents and Department well with her expert legal counsel on critical policy matters and key initiatives. We wish her well in her next chapter.”

An acting commissioner is expected to be appointed before Tahoe leaves the department.
