Officials from the state Department of Health, State Liquor Authority and the State Police will be monitoring compliance this evening for social distancing and face coverings, Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday told NY1 in an interview.

The monitoring comes as New York is working to avoid a second spike of coronavirus cases in a state that was hammered by the pandemic in late winter and spring. New York's cases have since ebbed, but the virus is spiking elsewhere in the country.

"Tonight, we're going to have State Police, we're going to have Department of Health monitors, we're going to have State Liquor Authority monitors," Cuomo said. "They're going to be looking all throughout the city to see if New Yorkers are complying. I've said to the local governments in New York, also on Long Island we have an issue, they have to enforce the compliance."

The monitoring comes as New York state and city officials are considering slowing the roll out of phase 3 for New York City of the economic reopening by not allowing indoor dining in city restaurants. Cuomo remains concerned air conditioning can spread the virus indoors.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has already announced an end to indoor dining; Cuomo expects to make a decision on Wednesday.

"We do a lot in coordination with New Jersey and Connecticut as you know, many of these activities, you know, if you don't go to a restaurant in New York City you can go to a restaurant in New Jersey, vice versa," Cuomo said. "So I don't want our state creating a problem for another state. But New Jersey is looking at the same issue and Governor Murphy, I spoke to, they have an issue on indoor dining."
