New York state is anywhere from 7-21 days from its “apex,” or peak number of coronavirus cases, according to Governor Andrew Cuomo.

As the state steadily tracks upwards, there are now more than 75,000 confirmed coronavirus cases.

The number of people currently hospitalized and require ICU care has also risen, urging Cuomo to again call on all hospitals in the state, upstate, downstate, private and public, to work together as one system.

"It's much easier said than done, but it needs to happen,” Cuomo urged. “The health care system is a chain. It breaks anywhere, it breaks everywhere.”

Cuomo said that the state has not transported patients yet from downstate to upstate hospitals, but they are working at transferring willing staff to help hospitals downstate.

The number of people who have passed away in New York from COVID-19 has now reached 1,550.

Cuomo is also still asking health care professionals from across the country to come to New York to help with the state’s growing crisis.

“We will pay you and more importantly, we will return the favor,” Cuomo said.

The state has ordered 17,000 ventilators from China, according to Cuomo, but only 2,500 are expected in the next few weeks. He says he hopes the ventilators come in before the state reaches its “apex.”

He adds New York and other states are now competing with FEMA in bidding for and purchasing ventilators.

Cuomo is also still encouraging people to stay home as much as possible and to be prepared to continue these new social distancing rules for the indeterminate future.

"This is not going to be an Easter surprise. Understand that and have the stamina to deal with it,” he said.

Cumo’s brother, Chris Cuomo, has now also tested positive for the coronavirus he announced Tuesday.

“He's my best friend….it can happen to anyone,” the governor said.

Chris Cuomo is currently experiencing mild symptoms and self-quarantining in his basement. He will continue to anchor his show on CNN from home.
