A coalition formed to push New York into becoming the first state that implements a carbon pricing plan is launching a statewide petition on Friday to further bolster their case.

The group, called CarbonFreeNY, wants the state to enact the plan backed by the New York independent System Operator.

The move they believe would be a fast and inexpensive way of having the state meet the goals of a climate change law approved last year meant to reduce the state's carbon footprint in the coming decades.

The petition push from the group is part of a six-figure advocacy campaign the coalition is undertaking to promote the plan. At the same time, the coalition sent a letter t Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the Public Service Commissioner and NYSDERA to promote the proposal.

The push also comes as Cuomo's 30-day budget amendments released last month included a renewable energy investment proposal.
