A coalition of businesses and business organizations this week urged top Democratic lawmakers in the state Senate and Assembly to reject a proposed ban on polystyrene products in Gov. Andrew Cuomo's budget.

The coalition is composed of restaurants, food producers, packaging manufactures and organized labor.

The proposal will include packing "peanuts" as well as those used for food containers.

"The unintended cost of the governor’s proposal would be felt by many New Yorkers," the coalition said in a statement. "The ban could particularly threaten small businesses operating in low-income communities around the state that cannot pass along costs to their customers, particularly minority owned small businesses in the downstate region."

The proposed ban is back in the headlines as New York's ban on plastic bags took effect on Sunday. The Department of Environmental Conservation plans to begin enforcing the ban at the start of April.
