Democrat Aaron Gladd will not run again for the state Senate district he sought in 2018.

Gladd ran a competitive race against Republican Daphne Jordan, who at the time was running to replace Republican Sen. Kathy Marchione.

“After a lot of conversation and reflection, my family and I have decided that I will not campaign in 2020 for the New York State Senate," Gladd said. "We have been humbled and overwhelmed by encouragement over the last year across the 43rd district, across upstate, and from both sides of the aisle.”

Gladd is a combat veteran and worked in Gov. Andrew Cuomo's administration. He was endorsed by one of Jordan's Republican predecessors in the state Senate, former Sen. Roy McDonald.

In his statement, Gladd cited family considerations.

“I have spent a lifetime of service to my country, my state, and my community," Gladd said. "This year, knowing that our daughter will be starting kindergarten, and knowing first hand the toll it will take to win and fight in Albany, we are going to take some time to step back and focus on family and health while serving a little closer to home. Who knows, maybe we will go to Disneyland.”

But Gladd may not be done with politics. Sources on Wednesday said he is being encouraged by party officials to run for Rensselaer County executive and face Republican incumbent Steve McLaughlin.
