Gov. Andrew Cuomo in a statement called on Facebook to remove ads critical of the effectiveness of an HIV-prevention drug called Truvada that have been called misleading and deceptive.

The ads have been blasted by LGBT advocates, who have called the ads that question Truvada’s effectiveness a hazard to public health. It’s estimated millions of users may have been exposed to the ads.

“Anticipating the concern and confusion this type of false advertising would have on users of Truvada, in October I directed the Department of Health to issue a letter reassuring healthcare providers that this medication is safe and effective,” Cuomo said.

“I urge New Yorkers to listen to their health care providers and not be swayed by these disturbing and misleading advertisements, which have no place in New York and must be taken down immediately.”

The ads come as the state has touted strides in the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Last week, state officials announced the estimated number of new HIV infections and newly confirmed HIV diagnoses have been reduced to a record low.
