Rep. Tim Kennedy, NY-26, says nursing homes across Western New York could see major cuts.
Federal Medicaid spending is being reduced by hundreds of millions of dollars in the “Big Beautiful Bill,” which President Donald Trump signed into law earlier this month.
Kennedy says 25% of nursing homes in the region are now at risk of closing. On Monday, he stood alongside unionized hospital workers to call on congressional Republicans to cancel the cuts.
"One in four nursing homes across this country, just like here at [Schofield Residence Nursing Facility], is slated to close,” Kennedy said. “Hundreds of hospitals across the country, particularly rural hospitals, are on the chopping block, including 11 here in New York state. This is devastating what they've done, all to give tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans."
The bill will likely eliminate health insurance for more than 1.5 million New Yorkers, according to the governor's office.
“The impact will be felt in all communities - urban, suburban, and rural alike," Kennedy added in part in a statement. "At a time when facilities are already struggling to provide essential care, we need to be investing in long-term care, not dismantling it. Lives depend on it.”
