The New York state Office of Victim Services has received a record-breaking $379.5 million over three years. The money comes from a civil asset forfeiture fund that collects money from federal lawsuits.
During the first administration of President Donald Trump, some of the money from the fund was directed elsewhere. If that happens again, Gov. Kathy Hochul has earmarked $100 million in state funding to offset those reductions.
The money will be awarded to 230 nonprofit organizations across New York that provide a range of services, including emergency shelters, crisis counseling, victim advocacy at police stations, civil legal help and support groups – all for victims of violence.
A portion of the funding will serve 25 marginalized communities with culturally appropriate assistance. One such organization, Rhahama, serves the Muslim immigrant and refugee community in Buffalo.
Here is a list of the grants awarded.
Bea Hanson, director of the Office of Victim Services, joined Capital Tonight to discuss the funding.
