A new bill introduced by New York U.S. Rep. Nick Langworthy seeks to tighten U.S. immigration controls over individuals who pose national security or public safety risks.
The SAFER at the Border Act would bar the U.S. secretary of homeland security from granting immigration parole to transnational criminals and those flagged in federal threat databases. Langworthy said the bill would also prevent the paroling of refugees.
The bill is cosponsored by New York Republican Reps. Nicole Malliotakis, Pete Stauber, Elise Stefanik and Claudia Tenney, and supported by the Immigration Accountability Project, Federation for American Immigration Reform and America First Policy Institute.
Langworthy said the legislation is aimed at closing dangerous loopholes in the law.
“A nation without secure borders is a nation in decline, and it’s time we take bold, decisive action to reverse the chaos of the last four years,” he said in a statement.
