The Tuxedo Union Free School District’s budget proposal was struck down after a revote, by a margin of only 17 votes.

The initial 2025-26 school year budget was voted down by nearly 90 votes in May. Following that vote, Superintendent Jeffrey White said that the district would take public feedback for the budget and its proposed 2.49% tax levy increase. The revised budget featured a tax levy increase of 1.628% and tax rate increase of 1.49%. Both increases were below the consumer price index of 2.95%.

But that, too, was voted down. Now, the district will adopt a contingency budget.

New York State School Board Association Chief Advocacy Officer Brian Fessler says a contingency budget limits what the district can spend money on; no new contracts, buses or equipment.

“A school district under a contingency budget is limited to those ordinary contingent expenses," he said. "That's preserving the property of the school district, fulfilling existing contracts and expenditures necessary for the health and safety of students and staff.”

Spectrum News 1 reached out to the Tuxedo school district several times; they did not return a request for an interview.
