A day after Zohran Mamdani shocked the New York establishment and won the Democratic primary for mayor, politicians of every ideological stripe — including the president — were adjusting to a new landscape with reactions ranging from joy to disgust.
“I will be your Democratic nominee for the mayor of New York City,” said Mamdani, the 33-year-old Democratic state assemblyman, declaring victory early Wednesday morning at his campaign watch party in Long Island City.

“An hour ago, I spoke with Andrew Cuomo about the need to bring this city together as he called me to concede the race,” he added.
“Together, we have shown the power of the politics of the future,” Mamdani said to the crowd, bringing City Comptroller Brad Lander, who cross-endorsed with him, up on stage.
Then early Wednesday morning, promising his vision will take him to City Hall in November during a radio interview on WNYC.
“What we were able to show yesterday was that for the New Yorkers that are worried about being unable to afford their rent or their childcare or even finding $2.90 for their MetroCard, as one in five New Yorkers struggle to do, that this election could actually respond to that very crisis and make the city more affordable for them,” he explained.
Mamdani was joined by supporters who had been with him all along on election night.
“His critics said that he should wait his turn, his critics said that he didn’t have the experience, his critics said that he didn’t have the right now, well now all of them know his goddamn name!” state Attorney General Letitia James said.
“He spoke to the struggles we all see, rising rents, crumbling public services, working families barely hanging on and he gave us something real to believe in,” Rep. Nydia Velazquez, whose district covers Brooklyn and Queens, said.
Those who endorsed the former governor, like Brooklyn state Assemblywoman and Kings County Party Chairwoman Rodneyse Bichotte-Hermelyn, said she’s been convinced to join Mamdani.
“New York City has been looking for a change and they got change. So I’m looking forward to working with him and I will be endorsing him,” she said at a separate watch party on Tuesday night.
Congratulations poured in from Gov. Kathy Hochul, U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer and U.S. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
“I had a lovely conversation with the governor,” Mamdani admitted to NY1 on Wednesday.
But not everyone is convinced, including Democratic Reps. Tom Suozzi and Laura Gillen of Long Island, who said Mamdani is “too extreme to lead New York City.”
Republicans also slammed him on the social media platform X.
On Truth Social, President Donald Trump posted, “...the Democrats have crossed the line. Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor.”
