Incumbent Rochester Mayor Malik Evans secured a win in the Democratic mayoral primary on Tuesday.

Evans is seeking a second term in November and faced a pair of challengers in the primary, with current East District City Councilor Mary Lupien and political newcomer and businessman Shashi Sinha also running.

With all precincts reporting, unofficial results showed Evans up 57-33% over Lupien, and Sinha picked up 10% of votes.

"This has been a tough year," Evans said at a campaign event Tuesday evening. "If you would have told me four years ago when I stood on this stage that Rochester, New York, a city on the banks of the Genesee, a city on the Erie Canal and on Lake Ontario would be ground zero for the federal government declaring war on Rochester. That your mayor would have gotten more death threats that no other mayor would have ever gotten, I would have said, 'No way.' But through it all, we persevered during the silliness of campaign season."

Lupien conceded the race on Tuesday, saying that despite the results, she says she does not believe the community isn't ready for progressive policy.

"So this is not over tonight," Lupien said. "And this was never necessarily about winning. I wanted to win, but I started this campaign to have a conversation about what we could do different. Because what is happening now, the status quo, is not working."

"You elected a leader, and I want to be your leader as we continue to tackle public safety to ensure that we send a message that one shooting is way too many," Evans said. "That we continue to expand job opportunities to young people. To make sure that the best violence prevention program is a J.O.B. And that we understand that the power comes not from city hall, but from the neighborhoods. That the power comes not from elected officials, but from all of you in this room and all the work that you do to help transform our community."

A former Rochester Board of Education president, Evans officially succeeded Lovely Warren in 2022 after running unopposed after he defeated Warren in the Democratic primary the year before.

Evans announced his re-election bid in January, touting the progress made in his first term, including a decrease in gun violence and homicides in Rochester, as well as investing more than $1 billion in affordable housing.
