State Sen. Sean Ryan has declared victory in the Democratic primary for Buffalo mayor.
With 100% of precincts reporting, unofficial results show Ryan received 12,249 votes, or 46.5%. The next closest candidate was Acting Buffalo Mayor Scanlon with 9,278 votes, or 35.3%.
Ryan says Buffalo has deep problems that stem from what he calls years of “gimmicky budgets,” and wants to rebuild the community after generations of redlining and disinvestment.
“When we’re out in the community, we hear the same thing over and over again: City Hall should be working hard to deliver results for every person, no matter what street you live on. We need to fix the basics,” Ryan said Tuesday night. “We need to plow the streets. We need to fix the community centers. Open the swimming pool. We need to work with police and firefighters to keep our community safe. And yes, we need to fill the damn potholes.”
Ryan also says Buffalo is facing a housing crisis, and wants to develop 10,000 to 20,000 vacant lots in the city and build homes on them. Ryan plans to create a policy that allows owners to renovate their family homes and build a second unit to rent out as an apartment.
“I will be a mayor for all of Buffalo,” Ryan said. “A mayor who brings us all together, because I know we need to unite Buffalo. Not just as Democrats, but as Buffalonians. We need to unite every neighborhood across the city. We need to work together to realize the vision we all know is possible.”
He was endorsed by the Erie County Democratic Committee and Western New York chapter of the Working Families Party.
Ryan faced challenges from Scanlon, Common Council Member Rasheed Wyatt, former Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield and community organizer Anthony Tyson-Thompson.
Attorney James Gardner is the Republican candidate in the race for Buffalo mayor.
The general election is on Nov. 4.
