Sunday marked the final day of early voting ahead of Primary Day on Tuesday.

New York state has a closed primary system, which means residents can only vote this time if they are registered in a political party that has a contested primary.

The top races Spectrum News 1 is tracking are Democratic primaries for mayor in each of the major cities across the state: AlbanySyracuseRochester and Buffalo.

In Albany, incumbent mayor Kathy Sheehan is not seeking reelection and four candidates are vying for the nomination. Those include Albany Chief City Auditor Dorcey Applyrs, Albany Common Councilman Corey Ellis, Albany County Legislator Carolyn McLaughlin and former tech executive Dan Cerutti.

In Syracuse, incumbent mayor Ben Walsh is term-limited and cannot run again. Three candidates are running in the Democratic primary there: Deputy Mayor Sharon Owens, Syracuse Common Councilman Patrick Hogan and Chol Majok, who also serves on the Common Council.

Incumbent Rochester Mayor Malik Evans is facing a primary challenge in his bid for re-election. Evans is running against Rochester City Councilwoman Mary Lupien and IT executive Shashi Sinha.

The city of Buffalo has the most crowded field with five candidates running in the Democratic primary.

Acting Mayor Christopher Scanlon, who took over after the previous mayor resigned last fall, is facing four primary challengers. Those are state Sen. Sean Ryan, Buffalo Common Council member Rasheed Wyatt, former Buffalo fire commissioner Garnell Whitfield and local activist Anthony Tyson-Thompson.

On Tuesday night, Spectrum News 1 will host special live coverage of primary night, beginning at 8 p.m. Polls close at 9 p.m.
