A new bill being introduced in the state Senate would increase the availability of tax incentives for volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers.

Sen. April Baskin is introducing legislation that would allow these groups to get tax credits for both property and state income tax.

Currently, volunteers have to choose between the two.

According to Sen. Baskin, this will help with recruiting.

Recently, the Firefighters Association of the State of New York said the number of volunteers has dropped by 40,000 over the last 20 years.

"We want to create as many incentives as we can to draw people back to the thriving population that we once had in this state," Baskin said.

Sen. Baskin says this won't be part of the still being negotiated budget, but she hopes the bill will pass this session.
