If you are getting ready to travel this spring or summer, you won’t be able to board a plane for a domestic flight with a standard license anymore. The deadline to upgrade your driver’s license is one month away.
There are two options on which ID may be right for you – the REAL ID or the Enhanced ID.
The lines at the DMV may be a bit longer than usual because of the deadline.
“Please be prepared," said Monroe County Airport Director Andy Moore. "Make sure you go out and get the proper identification, whether it’s the REAL ID or the Enhanced ID so you don’t interrupt your travel after the May 7 deadline that TSA has put on for the Enhanced ID or Real ID requirements to travel through a checkpoint at an airport."
You’ll need more documentation for the Enhanced ID and it will cost $30 more than the REAL ID. But it has more benefits. You can cross the border to Mexico and Canada with the Enhanced only, not with the REAL ID.
Some people also plan to use their passports for travel.
Monroe County Clerk Jamie Romeo says it’s an individual choice.
“I mean personally I would just recommend getting the enhanced," Romeo said. "It makes a lot of sense. We live right across the northern border. [The] international border is kind of normal for us. We live in one of those northern border states. If you do a lot of traveling, it's definitely something to consider.”
