Head Start programs in New York are still struggling with funding, even after a judge blocked a Trump administration freeze on federal grants.
The grants are the primary funding source for Head Start and its efforts to serve more than a half-million low-income children.
The executive director of the Warren County Head Start program says it's still waiting on half its federal grant funding for the fiscal year.
She says the money was supposed to arrive sometime between January and March.
The program only has enough money to continue services until April 18, and if they don’t receive the rest of their funding by then, they will have to temporarily suspend programs.
“There are 10 regional offices that support all of the programs throughout the United States. And on Tuesday of last week, April 1, five of those regional offices were shut down, New York being one of them,” said Shari Marci, executive director of the Warren County Head Start.
Warren County says its social services staff are “working with the staff at Head Start to identify other potential benefit programs to financially support Warren County Head Start centers.”
