Buffalo Congressman Tim Kennedy is calling on President Donald Trump to permanently rescind tariffs on Canada.

Rep. Kennedy said that Canada is our greatest ally and trading partner. He said that Trump's pausing of the tariffs is a positive step as Trump needs to avoid an all out trade-war.

“Since his initial announcement, I have urged President Trump to uphold the trade agreement with Canada that he negotiated and signed into law. While pausing tariffs on automakers yesterday and USMCA-covered goods today is a step back from the brink of an all-out trade war, the damage is already being felt across the nation. Just two days of implementation has thrown the economy of Western New York and North America into turmoil. It has left business owners with grave uncertainty and hardworking families facing the threat of skyrocketing gas, grocery, and housing prices. President Trump must end his reckless trade war with Canada, our greatest ally and trading partner, by immediately and permanently rescinding these tariffs.”

After proposing 25% tariffs on some imports from Canada and Mexico, Trump officially delayed the tariffs until April 2.

Last year, more than $412 billion worth of imports entered the U.S. through Canada nationwide, down slightly from 2023. Of that, 17%, or more than $69 billion, came through New York.
