There are plenty of reasons that women freeze their eggs, but it’s an expensive procedure: About $18,000, according to the New York Times, and health insurance probably won’t pay for it.

Commercial insurance only covers fertility preservation, like egg freezing, when infertility is caused by medical treatments like chemotherapy.

While more large companies are offering this kind of treatment, according to a survey of employer-sponsored health plans, fewer than 25% of large employers cover in vitro fertilization (IVF) right now.

But a new bill sponsored by Hudson Valley State Sen. Michelle Hinchey called the “Advancing Equal Access to Fertility Care Act” could change that in New York state.

The bill, which was discussed for the first time on Capital Tonight, would remove restrictions, making fertility preservation accessible to more New Yorkers.

Hinchey discussed the bill with Capital Tonight host Susan Arbetter.
