The electrate was supportive of President Donald Trump in November, but more than 75 million Americans voted for his opponent in former Vice President Kamala Harris. Some of those voters rallied across the country Monday to protest Trump’s second stint in the White House.

In the Empire State, there were rallies in Albany and New Paltz in the hours that followed Trump’s swearing-in ceremony in Washington, D.C. The theme was: “We fight back!”

The rallies were made up of various groups advocating for many issues, LGBTQ+ rights, climate change and immigration to name a few. The congregation stood together in opposition of what they called the president’s “ultra-right, billionaire agenda.”

“We’re out to show that we are ready to fight back against everything, not only what Donald Trump stands for, but the underlying conditions that created Donald Trump,” said Julian Mostachetti of Capital District Democratic Socialists of America.” “We believe that to be the system of capitalism itself. We’re here and we’re ready to fight back.”

There were also supporters of Palestine. The inauguration comes just days after Israel and Hamas agreed to the release of hostages, prisoners and a cease fire in the Middle East.

Former President Joe Biden and the incoming Trump administration have each taken credit. Protesters called it progress, but said it’s not enough and are hoping Trump keeps an open mind on the matter moving forward.

Some of the nation’s larget cities saw rallies like these, including in Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta.

“Meet with Palestinians, figure out what’s really going on, open his eyes and not drink the right-wing Kool-Aid,” said Eyad Alkurabi of the Ceasefire Coalition of the Capital District. “What I’d like to see is more civility in terms of respecting the left and what we’re doing and what we’re trying to accomplish.”
