A former candidate for New York's 24th Congressional District has died.

The family of David Wagenhauser confirms he died over the weekend after a brief illness.

"My father was a fighter for all - family, friends, and strangers alike - until the end," his daughter said in post on social media. "His fierce intellect, conviction, and heart will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Wagenhauser lived in Waterloo and was a Spencerport native.

He was the latest Democrat to seek election for NY-24.

His opponent, Claudia Tenney, won that seat in November.

Tenney released a statement on social media, sending condolences to Wagenhauser's family:

"I am very sad to hear that my former opponent, David Wagenhauser, passed away. My deepest condolences to his family during this unexpected tragedy."

Wagenhauser, who called himself a moderate Democrat, said he was looking to bring money to the 24th District by promoting more educational and career opportunities.

Geneva Democrats also released a statement on social media, saying they are proud of his commitment to social justice.

"Our hearts go out to the family of David Wagenhauser who tragically passed away this weekend. We were inspired by Dave's fierce commitment to social justice and were proud to support him in his congressional campaign last year. He fought hard and stayed true to his values. He will be missed."
