The death of an inmate at Marcy Correctional Facility earlier this month has triggered an investigation by the state Office of the New York State Attorney General, and at the direction of Gov. Kathy Hochul, the dismissal of 14 people employed at the facility.
Robert Brooks was serving a 12-year sentence for stabbing his girlfriend in 2016. The 43-year-old died on Dec. 10, one day after an encounter with officers who exercised a “use of force” according to Attorney General Letitia James. The AG said footage that is expected to shed more light on what transpired will be released in the coming day.
The governor did not entertain any questions on the incident during a toy distribution event in Albany on Monday. In the meantime, state Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon, Assemblyman Brian Miller and state Sen. Joe Griffo, all of whom represent the Central New York area where Marcy Correctional is located, are speaking out. The trio has been briefed on the matter by state officials and spoke with prison staffers.
“The reported use of force is unacceptable and cannot be condoned under any circumstances,” the joint statement read. “We respect due process and the ongoing investigations; those who are responsible for this disturbing deed must be held accountable.”
The lawmakers went on to say that it’s important to remember most of the men and women working in the state’s correctional facilities are “good and honorable individuals committed to public service."
Hochul shared a similar sentiment over the weekend while calling for the firing of those 14 individuals linked to the incident. Corrections Commissioner Daniel Martuscello III denounced their actions and said they’ve either been suspended or have resigned.
