New York State hasn’t voted Republican in a presidential race since Ronald Reagan was on the political stage, but that isn’t keeping former President Donald Trump from planning a massive campaign rally at Madison Square Garden for the end of the month.

“We just rented Madison Square Garden,” announced Trump on Wednesday during a campaign rally stop in Scranton, Pennsylvania. “We’re gonna make a play for New York, it hasn’t been done in a long time. It hasn’t been done in many decades. How could New York be run worse than it is, right?”

Trump rented out the nearly 20,000-seat arena for Oct. 27. On the campaign trail, he dinged the city for the migrant crisis.

The migrants have taken over Madison Avenue, they’ve taken over Fifth Avenue, they’ve taken over the parks.”

But local Democrats want to pull the welcome mat from under the former president.

“It’s not terribly dissimilar from that infamous rally back in 1939 at Madison Square Garden that was sponsored by the American Nazi Party,” Democratic State Sen. Brad Hoylman-Sigal told NY1 on Wednesday.

“Real New Yorkers know the real Donald Trump. You are not welcome at Madison Square Garden in my district,” Tony Simone, the Democratic State Assemblyman representing the district, said.

Joe Biden easily won New York in 2020. Registered Democratic voters outweigh Republicans, especially in the city, and polls have shown Kamala Harris with a sizable lead over Trump in New York. But the GOP is feeling confident.

“He provides an alternative viewpoint than what we are receiving from the Democrats under one party rule here. We’ve only been seeing from one party Democrat rule: high taxes, high cost of living, high crime, deteriorated quality of life,” Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, the city’s sole Republican member of Congress, said.

National polls show Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are neck and neck. And regardless of the presidential race, control of Congress could run through New York.

“We will see a lot of these policies that are driving New Yorkers out, that have made us less safe, have made this city unlivable and unaffordable for so many, those policies will become national policies if someone like Kamala Harris takes office,” Malliotakis said.

Trump became the first former U.S. president convicted on felony charges by a Manhattan jury this year for falsifying business records and paying hush money to a porn star. Hoylman-Sigal said Trump’s visit poses a safety risk.

“Someone who incites violence and sadly has been the object of an assassination attempt, at least two, is concerning, so our NYPD and our first responders are gonna have to be on high alert,” he told NY1.

Gov. Kathy Hochul insisted the city is ready during a press conference in Manhattan Wednesday at the Jacob Javits Center.

“This is America, Bernadette, so people can have rallies and it’s their right to gather, certainly, and I feel very confident in the police to handle it and if they need our help, we’ll be there. There’s 30,000 NYPD, I have 6,000 state police. If they need our help, we’re there,” Hochul said.

A representative for Madison Square Garden confirmed the event, but did not comment on the record when contacted by NY1.
