The state budget passed in April authorized an additional $285 million for nursing homes and $15 million for assisted living facilities in Medicaid reimbursement, but health care experts say the increase was less than what is truly needed to safeguard standards for quality care.
The last time reimbursement rates were regularly hiked for nursing homes and assisted living facilities was 17 years ago in 2007.
Nursing homes and assisted living facilities are facing a perfect storm: An aging population with greater needs, inadequate Medicaid reimbursement and staffing mandates.
Assemblyman Harvey Epstein, a Manhattan Democrat, spoke with Capital Tonight’s Susan Arbetter about a bill that if passed this session, would ensure that when nursing homes close, residents are prepared for their next chapter.
The bill is awaiting the governor’s signature or veto.
