Flags at New York State buildings will be flown at half staff indefinitely starting Wednesday in remembrance of the lives lost as a result of the recent terrorist attacks against the state of Israel, Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement Tuesday.

“New York stands in solidarity with Israel and the Jewish community," Hochul said in a statement. “I am proud to serve as governor of the state that is home to the largest Jewish population outside of Israel and I am committed to doing everything in my power to make sure that this community is supported and protected today and every day."

Hochul has also directed state police to increase patrols of Jewish sties across the state.

On Saturday, New York landmarks were illuminated in blue and white in solidarity with Israel, per the governor’s orders.

Across the five boroughs, vigils and demonstrations have continued to take place in response to the war between Israel and Hamas. 

Hundreds of people gathered at a park near the U.N. Tuesday to show support for Israel. 

Both Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams were among elected officials who attended the event.
