A proposed solar farm in Colonie is causing some concern amongst neighbors and environmental advocates.

Over the last 16 years, Deb Kazmierczak has spent most mornings sitting on her front porch with a cup of coffee.

"We have a ball out here,” Kazmierczak said. “It's peaceful, it's quiet. We actually were going to face the house that way but then turned it this way because we didn't want to miss this gorgeous view."

A proposed solar farm would begin just 100 feet from her doorstep and take up all that land in front of her home.

“We are not opposed to solar,” Kazmierczak said. “We really love the idea of it, but we just don't want it right in our viewpoint, right in our front yard. That would be sad and we'd probably sell."

Not only is the proposal causing concerns for neighbors, but environmental groups. The proposal is currently in the sketch plan phase, with ideas of the solar farm extending into the Pine Bush Preserve.

Lynne Jackson is a volunteer with not-for-profit Save the Pine Bush. While she's a strong proponent of solar energy, she doesn’t think this is the place for it.

"Solar energy does not belong in the Pine Bush, and this is considered by the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission as land that should be in full protection," Jackson said.

She's asking the state of New York to get involved and find an alternative location.

"Why not put solar energy on parking lots and buildings instead of in beautiful natural habitats like the Pine Bush?" Jackson said.

Kazmierczak worries about the impact this could have on the animals that frequent the area.

"This was our forever home,” Kazmierczak said. “We built a ranch, we're getting older, this is where we were going to stay, retire, our grandkids, you know? That's not going to happen if we have to deal with this. We don't know anything about what it's going to do for glare or pollution or environmental or for safety."

Save the Pine Bush will hold a virtual meeting April 20 where the proposal will be discussed.
