Hospitalizations for the coronavirus in New York State are the lowest they've been since December 4, according to a press release from Governor Cuomo's office on Sunday. There has been a 53% drop since the holiday peak, down to 4,355.

At present, 890 patients are in the ICU and 572 are intubated. As of Saturday, 54 new deaths were recorded.

The statewide positivity rate stands at 3.22% and the seven-day positivity rate is 3.3%.

Governor Cuomo also addressed the latest variant first identified in Brazil that has now reached the state in his latest press release.

"We're fighting COVID-19 on all fronts and getting vaccines in arms across the state, but the virus is still a threat and new variants, including the Brazilian strain identified in New York City yesterday, should give New Yorkers cause for concern," Cuomo said. "We're in a race to get as many New Yorkers vaccinated as possible before the variants can disrupt the progress we've made, but the infection rate is also a function of our actions. Washing hands, wearing masks and social distancing are vital tools we can use to stay safe and slow the spread. I urge New Yorkers to stay vigilant and keep making smart decisions — we're moving through the COVID-19 pandemic, but it isn't over yet."

As of Sunday afternoon, Cuomo announced that more than 7.5 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in New York, nearly 140,000 of those within the last 24 hours.

At this time, 25.7% of New Yorkers have receive at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 13.2% have had a fully series of doses.
