SUNY students will not be returning to school after Thanksgiving break, and Governor Andrew Cuomo is now asking private colleges to consider doing the same.
SUNY students will be tested before they go home for Thanksgiving and continue to learn remotely after that. New York’s statewide positive COVID-19 infection rate increased to 1.9%. Cuomo says upstate New York is doing worse than downstate.
Western New York’s positive infection rate is at 2.8%; the Finger Lakes is at 2.6%; and Central New York is at 2.2%.
Cuomo says he will be speaking with local officials over the weekend in Erie, Monroe, and Onondaga counties about targeted restrictions to deal with the rise in COVID-19 cases.
"At these numbers and in these areas, a micro-cluster response is appropriate," Cuomo said.
Also big news for Western New York: Cuomo announced that there will be no fans allowed in to Buffalo Bills games any time soon.
"It would be reckless to open the stadium up to spectators," he said.
Cuomo says that as a Bills fan, he hopes the stadium will be allowed to reopen this season.
Cuomo says he will be increasing the National Guard’s presence at airports to make sure travelers from states with high infection rates have been tested for COVID-19.
“You should not land if you do not have proof of a negative test," Cuomo said.
