In an interview on “Inside City Hall” a day after declaring his candidacy for governor next year, Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado said “a strong, bold, clear-eyed vision” is needed to lead New York.
Delgado on Monday became Gov. Kathy Hochul’s first official challenger in the 2026 Democratic gubernatorial primary.
On Tuesday, Delgado said while he wanted to be part of the decision-making process in his current role, he didn’t see a decision-making process.
“One in four folks right now in New York cannot afford basic needs. What’s the vision for that? Where’s the decision making around that to make sure we have a clear path forward? I’m not seeing it, and I haven’t seen it since I’ve been lieutenant governor,” Delgado said.
Delgado said saying “we’re mad at Trump” is not enough.
“At the end of the day, we need bolder, more aggressive, transformational leadership, and simply just tinkering around the edges, simply just managing the status quo, is not going to get us here,” he said.
Delgado was elected to New York’s 19th congressional district in 2018, covering a region stretching from the Finger Lakes to the Hudson Valley. He was appointed by Hochul to the then-vacant position of lieutenant governor in 2022.
