House Republicans unveiled a budget proposal late Sunday, which President Donald Trump has called a “big, beautiful bill.”
But not all Republicans are in favor of it.
Congress members of some high-income taxpayer districts in New York and California have long called for an increase to the cap on state and local tax deductions, also known as SALT.
It’s been an issue they have been looking to address ever since Trump capped it back in 2017.
The proposal on the table currently would bring the cap from $10,000 to $30,000.
It has caused a split in the New York delegation of House Republicans.
Congress members Elise Stefanik, Andrew Garbarino, Nick Lalota and Mike Lawler say it’s not enough. They called the number “insulting” and threatened to not vote in favor of Trump’s budget bill unless the cap rose even more.
Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, whose district includes all of Staten Island and parts of south Brooklyn, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Monday to discuss more.
She supports the $30,000 limit.
Malliotakis is also a member of the House Ways and Means Committee and the Subcommittee on Tax.
